MolySym : Technology for Research & Education

The students of today are the scientists of tomorrow.

MolySym’s mission is to promote molecular literacy in support of careers in biotechnology, materials science and nanotechnology, by developing technology and thinking tools that improve the understanding of physical, chemical and biological changes on the atomic and molecular scale.

Biotechnology and nanotechnology are exciting new technologies which offer great commercial rewards and with vast potential to improve the human condition. Nanotechnology is the ability to manipulate matter at the molecular level. Biotechnology is a kind of nanotechnology -- nanotechnology applied to biological systems. These new technologies will create better and entirely new materials, devices, and systems. What does this mean? It means new jobs due to new markets. In fact, it is projected that by the year 2011, the demand for nanotechnology medical products will increase over 17 percent per year to $53 billion in 2011. Afterwards, the increasing flow of new nanomedicines, nanodiagnostics, and nanotech-based medical supplies and devices into the US marketplace will boost demand to more than $110 billion in 2016. Funding for nanotechnology research has nearly doubled each year as the U.S. invested $710 million dollars in research in 2003.

With high demand for biotechnology and nanotechnology, for the United States to remain strong in the increasingly globalized economy of the 21st century, the industry will need a workforce that reflects and embraces the ethnically and demographically diverse population of this country. In addition to filling the high demand for talent, diversity improves a workforce by sparking innovation and creativity, increasing intellectual diversity, improving public perception, and leading to a better acceptance of various perspectives. To meet the increasing demand for diversity of chemists and chemical engineers in the biotechnology and nanotechnology industries, MolySym is developing software and hardware products that facilitate the teaching of physical chemistry principles involved in molecular interactions. These tools prepare students for research and development in biotechnology, nanotechnology and pharmaceuticals.
